MOVIE REVIEW
For a gift I received a subscription to "Netflix." There was one stipulation with the free subscription - I had to submit a review on each movie I rented. The following is my theological assessment of "The Movies that I Rent."
THIS WEEK: MAMMA MIA! (PG-13 1 hr. 48 min.)
"Abba-cadaver." If you want some resurrected old songs by ABBA, this is the musical for you. It is hard to be critical of just a fun movie with all kinds of good songs in it. The acting is good but it is rated PG-13 for the reason that there are some adult sexual themes that aren't appropriate for children. (and maybe adults, too?)
The theme of the movie revolves around the wedding of the daughter of a single mom. Moms secret is she doesn't know who the father of her daughter really is. It could be any one of three. The daughter, wanting to know her father, invites all three to her wedding and all three show up. Cue comedy.
The movie has some laughs, some good songs, but the plot is slow and you know that all will turn out good in the end. The greatest part of the movie is the location. Mamma is the owner of a run down hotel on a Greek Island. The scenery is something out of a dream. Who wouldn't love to own anything on a pristine Greek Island?
I'm not sure that I can draw any theological motifs out of this movie. God sure did a beautiful thing creating the world and the Greek islands may be God's greatest achievement. Too bad people with all their bad choices, twisted relationships, and self-protective behavior have to mess it up.
It's fun to watch with your spouse. If it makes her laugh, I am for it.
3 out of 5 stars just for being corny in some scenes.
